2017 Crasto DOC White

Mark Squires, Robert Parker Wine Advocate, August 2019

“The 2018 Branco, in a bottle about four months when seen, is a blend of 40% Viosinho, 30% Gouveio and 30% Rabigato, unoaked (but for 15% of the juice for three months in used barrels) and coming in at 12% alcohol. This is not the most concentrated wine, but it is rather terrific in its freshness, clean finish and balanced demeanor. It's a classic fresh white that also has an extra dimension—an ability to age a bit. This is lovely, a wine that winemaker Manuel Lobo compares to the gracefully aging 2008.”

“A juicy, fruity red with lots of fruit that verges on being jammy. It’s full and very fruity at the end. Soft, lightly chewy tannins. Touriga nacional, tinta roriz, touriga franca and tinta barroca. Drink or hold.”

2018 Crasto DOC Red

Mark Squires, Robert Parker Wine Advocate, February 2020

“The 2018 Tinto is a blend of Tinta Roriz (30%), Touriga Franca (25%), Touriga Nacional (35%) and Tinta Barroca (10%). About 15% (a deliberate increase from what used to be a nominal 5%) of the blend was aged in second-use French oak for six months, the rest in tank. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. This was just bottled in December. Elegant and balanced, this shows good fruit, ripe tannins, freshness and an easygoing demeanor. It doesn't have a lot of flesh, but it certainly isn't thin. It tastes great. It drinks nicely as a house pour and should hold reasonably well—not that it needs to be held long, or necessarily should be. This is Crasto's workhorse red—there were 240,000 bottles produced from vines over 20 years in age.”

2017 Crasto DOC Red

Mark Squires, Robert Parker Wine Advocate, August 2019

“The 2017 Tinto, in bottle about four months when first seen, is a blend of Tinta Roriz (30%), Touriga Franca (25%), Touriga Nacional (35%) and Tinta Barroca (10%). About 15% (a deliberate increase from what used to be a nominal 5%) of the blend was aged in second use French oak for six months, the rest in tank. Crasto's idea with the increase in oak going forward is to change the wine's texture a bit and add a bit of gravitas. This has come together really well since last seen, fleshing out, showing a bit more power and (most importantly) vivid flavor. I'm not sure if this will hold serve throughout its useful life, but at the moment, it is worth leaning up on this succulent but fresh Tinto. It comes in at 14% alcohol.”
