2015 Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional

“The 2015 Touriga Nacional was aged for 16 to 18 months in new, light-toast French oak (two different vineyard plots averaging 35 years in vine age, fermented separately). A selection of the best barrels, it comes in at 14.4% alcohol. This is the first Touriga Nacional offering since the 2012. When first seen about a year ago, it was lovely. It is more aromatic and sensual now but still very unevolved. It still has that subtle concentration to make you feel every ounce of the fruit on the palate while never seeming jammy. The tannins are very ripe, making this easy to approach right now, but there is grip on the finish and the fruit lingers beautifully. It is very suave and refined. This has upside potential in the cellar. It is certainly a star. I'm not yet fully convinced it is a superstar, but it may one day get there. For the moment, let's be a bit conservative again. There were just 6,808 bottles produced, plus some large-format bottles.”

“The 2016 Reserva Old Vines (an average age of 70 years) represents 37 of Crasto's 42 plots and/or small vineyards of old vines. In 2016, three were discarded for poor performance, while Maria Teresa and Ponte were not included because they were bottled separately this year. It was aged for 16 to 18 months, depending on lot, in 65% new oak (85/15 French and American) and comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Solid in the mid-palate, this has impressive depth and a seductive demeanor. The finish lingers beautifully. After an initial creamy hit of texture, it becomes silkier and sensual. Beautifully balanced, this has moderate tannins. It drank well after some hours of double decanting, but it is not really ready to drink. It will be much better around 2023, although it is approachable. How does it compare to the 2015 revisited this issue? They weren't really tasted together, although in relatively close proximity. The 2015 may have better-defined fruit. This might have a little more depth. They are both very fine and a lot of fun. They both need to develop some complexity. It will take a few years to determine who the winner is for sure. I lean to the 2015, but let's call it even for the moment. There were 87,000 bottles produced.”

“The 2015 Reserva Old Vines is a field blend from old vines (average age: 70 years) aged for 16 to 18 months in 65% new oak (85% French, the rest American), depending on the lots. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. This year, as reported in my first look at this about a year ago, Crasto eliminated two southern-exposure plots in the vineyard because they were not fresh enough. Plus, Maria Teresa and Vinha da Ponte lots were eliminated because both produced separate wines this year.”

“The 2015 Late Bottled Vintage Port is a field blend with 95 grams of residual sugar. It is a traditional, unfiltered LBV bottled in February 2019 with a long cork. The mid-palate here is average, but the structure is a bit more notable. The fruit is very tasty, in a dry and controlled fashion, but this young LBV shows no hint of complexity or gravitas just yet. It needs a little more time to develop, obviously. It should hold well—there is no rush. Even if you think it is approachable now—moderate power does come out with aeration—it will benefit from a couple of years in the bottle. I'm not surprised this is showing well—in 2015, Crasto made one of its best ever Vintage Ports—but it is a bit understated, relatively speaking, especially on opening. If it is not quite as impressive in its category as the 2015 Vintage Port was, it still managed to improve dramatically when retasted the next day. At that point, there were some nuances of eucalyptus on the nose as well. There were 47,300 bottles produced (a dramatic uptick over the difficult 2014 vintage), plus 12,000 half bottles, from vines with an average age over 60 years old.”
