2017 Puech-Haut Tête de Belier Rouge

Jeb Dunnuck, April 2019

“The 2017 Tête De Belier shows the changing style at this estate and offers a more Northern Rhône vibe in its green olive, bacon fat, smoked herbs, and meaty black fruits. Based on 70% Syrah, 20% Grenache, and the rest Mourvèdre and Carignan, aged in barrel, it’s medium to full-bodied, has a concentrated yet focused texture, and a great finish. It’s going to benefit from a year or two of bottle age.”

2019 Puech-Haut Tête de Belier Rosé

Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, June 2020

“Almost entirely Mourvèdre (the appellation requires the wine to be a blend), the 2019 Languedoc Tête de Bélier Rosé features strawberry-like aromas alongside hints of crushed stone, tropical fruit (guava?) and fresh citrus. It's on the full-bodied side of things for a rosé, yet it doesn't come across as being heavy or overly rich, just concentrated, with a long, silky finish.”

Made mostly from Mourvèdre, it's medium-bodied, has perfectly integrated acidity, terrific balance, and a clean, dry, juicy finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. 2018 Puech-Haut Tête de Belier Blanc

Jeb Dunnuck, August 2020

“Based on 40% Viognier and 30% each of Marsanne and Roussanne that was fermented and aged in barrel, the 2018 Tete De Belier Blanc offers a rich yet pure and vibrant bouquet of apricots, white flowers, honeysuckle, brioche, and caramelized pineapple. It's beautifully done, medium to full-bodied, has both richness and freshness, and a great finish. It's a brilliant white that reminds me slightly of a Condrieu from the likes of Andre Perret. Drink it over the coming year or three.”

2017 Puech-Haut Tête de Belier Blanc

Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, May 2019

“A barrel-fermented wine based mainly on Roussanne, the 2017 Languedoc Saint Drezery Tête de Bélier Blanc looks to be another thrilling example of this bottling. Hints of toast highlight notes of marshmallow, apricot and pineapple on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is creamy and ripe, then brought into crisp focus on the long finish by hints of white pepper and tannin.”

2018 Puech-Haut Prestige Rouge

Jeb Dunnuck, August 2020

“Based on Syrah and Grenache brought up mostly in concrete tanks, the 2018 Languedoc Prestige comes from older vines and limestone soils not far from the Pic Saint Loup appellation in the Languedoc. Incredibly consistent, it sports a deep purple hue as well as a ripe, sexy bouquet of both red and black fruits intermixed with lots of spice, chocolate, and earthy, peppery nuances. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, with a pure, velvety mouthfeel and a great finish, it's going to evolve for a solid 3-5 years, possibly even a decade, although there's no need to delay gratification, as it's beautiful today.”

2018 Puech-Haut Prestige Rouge

Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, June 2020

“The mainly tank-aged 2018 Languedoc Prestige is a blend of Syrah and Grenache. Possessing more depth and structure than the Argali bottling, it offers scents of cherries and blackberries on the nose, followed by flavors of dark fruit and chocolate and a medium to full-bodied palate lined with silky tannins. There's just enough grip to support 3-4 years of aging.”

“Ripe, meaty black cherries, black olives, pepper, and garrigue notes all emerge from the 2017 Prestige, which is a tank-aged blend of 55% Grenache and 45% Syrah sourced from the Saint Drézéry region of the Languedoc. Deep, full-bodied, and downright sexy, it’s loaded with fruit, has sweet tannins, and terrific purity of fruit as well as character. Drink it any time over the coming 7-8 years.”

2016 Puech-Haut La 40ème

Jeb Dunnuck, April 2019

“A blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah brought up in two-thirds new oak, the 2016 La 40 ème is only made in top vintages and was previously made in 2002, 2007, and 2010. It stands out in the lineup and reminds me of an old school Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its bloody, meaty, olive-laced notes of ground pepper, smoked earth, garrigue, and assorted dark fruits. With full-bodied richness, a concentrated, deep, layered texture, and sweet tannins, it’s a monster of a wine that stays perfectly balanced. Give bottles 2-3 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 10-15 years.”

2016 Puech-Haut Clos du Pic

Jeb Dunnuck, April 2019

“I was blown away by the 2016 Le Clos Du Pic, which is a 60/40 split of Syrah and Mourvèdre that spent 18 months in barrel. Its deep purple color is followed by an opulent, sexy, full-bodied Pic Saint Loup that knocks it out of the park with its ample dark fruits, kirsch liqueur, ground herbs, cracked black pepper, and graphite. A big, rich, powerful wine, it stays graceful and balanced, and just glides over the palate. Hats offer to the team at Puech Haut for another incredible wine.”

2016 Puech-Haut Bosc Negre

Jeb Dunnuck, April 2019

“The 2016 Bosc Negre is the Mourvèdre dominated cuvée of the estate (there’s 10% tank-aged Grenache), destemmed and brought up in new barrels. It’s another rich, powerful wine from this estate that stays beautifully balanced. Classic notes of kirsch, blackberries, ground pepper, bouquet garni, and smoked earth all flow to full-bodied 2016 that has terrific purity, building tannins, and a layered, multi-dimensional texture that ranks with the best wines out there. It has plenty of upfront appeal but is going to benefit from a few years of bottle age.”
